Do the coops need painting, oiling or staining?

Nope. If you paint them, you trap the moisture inside the timber, and that encourages rot. I do sell a stain that is not petroleum based but we have only stained a few coops and they really don’t need it. The coops are intended to go grey and blend in with your garden.

If you bury the bottom frame in mulch it will rot eventually, but even in the wettest of gardens we find them lasting well over 5 years. If needed, the bottom frame can be replaced independently of the upper frames but even so, I have only had to do that a few times in the 8 years Rentachook has been operating and nearly 1000 coops sold (as at 2009).
